was at the allotment at 6am this morning for some watering —- oooh it was so lovely and fresh there and the sun so gentle……     by the time i left the sun was hot!

So potatoes earthed up, peas climbing, garlic and onions doing well, courgette and fruit bushes in… gladioli and dahlias in… just the sweet peas and brassicas to go!

another busy day down on the allotment!   Peas are in, covered with fleece against the chilly nights.  Potatoes in - now we wait!   Raspberry canes in! (still got to cage them and put in supports….), onions and garlic doing well - shallots a little slow!

Still - at least we have had rain this week - so something is happening!

quick trip to the allotment

today i popped to the allotment briefly and managed to open the lock…. but didnt shut it behind me for fear of getting locked in ;-)

I wanted to see what damage the wind had done.  We have had terrible gales this week… and so it was that all the black membrane so loving put down on christmas eve now lay strewn around with gay abandon, held in place by one or two pegs… oh dear!

And the weeds did not waste the time in getting going again! Nature IS relentless.

ANyway - black membrane back in place - big sigh of relief… but the good news is the garlic is poking through… lots of little shoots showing that despite the winter ravages - growth is occuring!

Am very excited!!!    Must get on with planning what we will plant and getting my head round all this rotational beds……  more books needed!!

allotment out of bounds…..

sadly the lock to the allotments is out of order, someone got locked in a couple of days ago…. oops…. so until a new lock is put in we are all advised to stay away.  very frustrating.

so instead - today i did some clearing up of dead leaves etc in my own garden - and a soggy muddy mess it was too!

so on Christmas Eve 2011, Alice and i bravely visited the allotment to cover our newly dug patch with a black membrane to stop the weeds taking hold over the winter… looks good eh?

We also planted some garlic, onions and shallots!  YEAH we are allotmenteers… boy i have never know such cold earth in my life!!!  But we are feeling positive!   Got a compost bin installed also… so all is go.

Was great to see some of our allotment colleagues there also - great feeling of comaraderie… (is that word?)..

So, next steps planned… the potatos i think… update soon!  :-)

so… we have taken on an allotment!

We have a half allotment (big enough i can tell you!) I am undertaking this with two of my daughters, alice and louise.  sarah, my other daughter, is already a year ahead of us with an allotment about two pitches down from ours…. she is the expert that we are all leaning on…

We took on our pitch at the start of November 2011… At first it looked kinda overgrown, but on digging we discovered that it had been well tended as the soil was loose and in good condition.

So gradually it has been totally dug over - and now we wait for the opportunity to plant and grow….
